The Cowculator: Reframing farm finance for Shire Leasing


The challenge

Shire Leasing faced a fundamental barrier in agriculture: farmers saw leasing as a cost, not an investment.

Lead generation relied heavily on physical events, making it expensive, time-consuming and difficult to scale. At the same time, there was scepticism around digital – with a widespread assumption that farmers were not active online, despite research into Meta showing high usage of the UK farmer population using the channel.

To grow, Shire needed to change perception and create a scalable way to generate better-quality leads.

 

The approach

We created The Cowculator — a simple, interactive tool that reframes leasing in the language farmers understand.

By inputting milk price, yield and herd size, farmers can instantly see the potential revenue generated from leasing additional livestock.

This shifted the conversation from:

“What does it cost?”
to
“What could it earn?”

This shifted engagement from sales-led to curiosity-led – and the tool itself did the heavy lifting.

 It worked because it:

  • Spoke the language farmers already use
  • Made it personal with their own farm data
  • Reframed leasing as a growth driver, not a cost
  • Moved the conversation from cost to opportunity

Launched via targeted Meta campaigns, the tool drove farmers directly to a personalised, ROI-led experience – removing friction and building understanding before any sales conversation.

The results

  • 150+ qualified leads in 6 weeks
  • £450k in approved new business from a new channel
  • Cost per lead under £20

More importantly, it changed behaviour.

Leads were more informed, conversations became ROI-driven, and Shire unlocked a scalable digital acquisition channel in a traditionally offline sector.
